Feast of St. Ursula/ Distinguished Alumni![]() We celebrated the Feast of St. Ursula, our namesake and the patroness of the Ursuline Sisters who founded our school. At the liturgy, Margene Flannery Chambers, class of 1954, and Monsignor John Zuraw, class of 1978, were honored as the recipients of the 22nd annual Distinguished Alumni Awards. Margene Flannery Chambers, class of 1954, was born in Youngstown, attended old St. Ann School in Brier Hill, and enrolled at Ursuline as had her siblings, Gloria Flannery Crofford '39 and Grace Flannery Gallagher '42. Margene attended Youngstown College before her marriage to Paul Chambers in 1956. Margene received her bachelor's degree in banking administration from Youngstown State University, and she spent 23 years in the banking business with Metropolitan Bank as a branch manager in Campbell and at the main downtown office before retiring in 2001. Margene served on the Board of Directors of Beatitude House from 1992-2007 and is currently a member of the Finance Committee. She is a member of both St. Charles and St. Michael parishes where she serves as a lector and homebound minister. At St. Charles, Margene is also a nursing home minister, volunteers in the soup kitchen, and serves on the Worship Commission and Pastoral Concil. Margene has been a faithful alumna of Ursuline. She annually volunteers for the Phone-a-Thon in support of the Annual Appeal, serves as a Class Captain, and helps plan class reunions. Margene and her husband Paul have raised five children- Mary Jo Letera, Terry Muldoon, Paul Chambers Jr., Tom Chambers, and Beth Connelly. They are blessed with 12 grandchildren and await the birth of their great grandchild in November. Monsignor John Zuraw '78 was born in Campbell and attended t. Joseph the Provider School before enrolling at Ursuline. Following graduation, Monsignor Zuraw attended Youngstown State University. he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus and a Masters of Divinity degree from The Athenaeum of Ohio in 1987. He was ordained by the Most Reverend James W. Malone, Bishop of Youngstown, in June 1987, and in 1989, he earned a Licentiate in Canon Law from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Monsignor Zuraw has served as Parochial Vicar at St. Louis Parish in Louisville and at St. Rosh Parish in Girard. He was the Director of Vocations (1996-2002), the Executive Director of Clergy and Religious Services (1996-2008), and the Administrator of Immaculate Conception Parish (1999-Present). Currently, Monsignor is the Promoter of Justice, the Director of the Permanent Diaconate Program, and the Vicar of Diocesan Planning and Administration. He was named Chaplain of His Holiness with the title of Monsignor in March 1997. Monsignor Zuraw's additional service to the Church has included the Diocesan Board of Religious Education, Priests' Personnel Board, Diocesan Tribunal, Priests' Retirement Board, Priests' Council, Ursuline College Faculty in Canon Law, the Diocesan College of Consulters, and the Diocesan Review Board. All of us are proud of the many accomplishments of these two fine graduates. State Champions![]() Congratulations to the Ursuline High School Fighting Irish Football Team who were crowned the 2009 Division V State Champions by defeating Coldwater 55-25. The irish are the first team in the Mahoning Valley to win back to back state championships in football.
Open House![]() Please join the Ursuline community for our annual Open House on Sunday, February 7 from 1:00-3:30 in the Ursuline cafeteria. Prospective parents and students will have the opportunity to learn more about Ursuline's college preparatory curriculum that challenges and nurtures every student and the extensive opportunities available to participate in athletic teams, co-curricular clubs, service activities, and the fine and performing arts Student Ambassadors will be giving personal tours all afternoon and the entire staff of administrators and teachers will be available to answer questions. The Class of 2013![]() Ursuline welcomed the Class of 2013 during Freshman Orientation on Friday, August 21. In four years this class will be the 105th graduating class of Ursuline. Although their Ursuline journey is just beginning, we anticipate great things from our newest freshmen. The 128 freshmen include students from over 20 different elementary and junior high schools throughout Mahoning and Trumbull County. The Freshman Orientation Program will continue with the Class Retreat and Dinner on Wednesday, September 16 and Freshman Olympics on Friday, September 25. During the retreat, freshmen will visit Our Lady of Mt. Carmel to begin their spiritual journey as a class. The Freshman Dinner begins at 6:00 in the cafeteria. Parents should have received information about the dinner in the mail. The annual Freshman Olympics will challenge freshman teams in a variety of mental, physical, and teamwork games. All freshmen are also participating in a special study skills unit to reinforce successful study, homework, organizational and learning habits essential to the their future success. Junior High Parent Information Night![]() Junior high and elementary parents are invited to attend an informational program on Tuesday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ursuline Auditorium. The program will answer the many questions a parent may have about Ursuline’s curricular program, athletics and extracurricular activities, tuition and scholarship assistance, and the social and spiritual environment of the school. Presentations from the administration will be followed by a question and answer period, tours of the school, and an opportunity to meet current Ursuline students. Irish Cheerleaders![]() Congratulations to the Ursuline Cheerleaders who earned numerous awards at the Otterbein College Cheer Camp held this summer. The squad placed first in the Spirit Award competition and third in the dance competition. The girls were also voted the Most Admired Squad and their hallway was the best decorated. Overall, the cheerleaders received a superior rating. The cheerleaders are led by senior captain Cara Mia Gatti and advised by Gail Davis and our principal, Mrs. Fleming. |
