Three Ursuline High School Seniors Named Semifinalists

in the

2008 National Merit Scholarship Program

 

            Ursuline High School has three members of the Class of 2008 named semifinalists in the 53rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.  They are Tom Goldthwait, Jon Proch and Grace Sauline.

 

Tom Goldthwait is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Goldthwait.  He attended the Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley.  He is active in band, French Club, the Youngstown Area Community Concert Band, the YSU English Festival and Math Festival.  He hopes to study Music at Youngstown State University.

 

Jon Proch is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Proch.  He attened the Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley and is a member of Poland Presbyterian Church.  While at Ursuline, he has participated in band, speech, the YSU English Festival and Math Fest.  He has served as the technical director of Ursuline theater productions and is a member of the National Honor Society.  He plans to attend Case Western Reserve University or Carnegie Mellon to study Engineering.

 

Grace Sauline is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Sauline.  She graduated from Saint Rose School in Girard and is a member of the parish.  She has been involved in band, track, choir, and the YSU English Festival and Math Fest.  She was on crew for the Ursuline theater productions, a member of the National Honor Society and the Saint Rose Folk Choir.  She plans to study Civil Engineering at Case Western Reserve University.

 

            Students who qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program have the opportunity to compete for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards totaling $33 million that will be offered next spring.  To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements and advance to the Finalist level of the competition.  About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing and approximately half of the finalists will be selected Merit Scholarship winner, earning the Merit Scholar title.
